Try "gnome-xgl-settings" and see if XGL is still running if so use this to
kill XGL until you figure out what is going on , you need to be root for
this command .
You may have to go to run level 3 then startx as root to do or I have had to
use Icewin to run this command (gnome-xgl-settings) because KDE would not
let me .
Log out of session there you will see log in and lower left can change
sessions select Icewin , then run Shell from there , "gnome-xgl-settings".
