[NTLUG:Discuss] Monitor/Xserver problem

I had to reinstall my system today and, after doing so successfully, I 
found that when the system tried to bring up the log in screen, by 
starting kdm, the monitor would go blank for a minute and then come back 
to the command line without giving me a chance to log in. This makes it 
all but impossible to use the system. I am using Debian 3.1 release 5, 
kernel 2.4, kdm/kde and xserver-xfree86. Does any one have an idea as to 
what might be causing this?
