This is caused most likely by invalid screen
resolution/refresh rate in the X setup. 

login on the commandline as root and run the
commandline X setup 
$XF86Setup (if you really are running XFree) 

Or

$xorgsetup (if you are running XOrg.)  

Different distros have different spellings and
capitalizations of this command, so you may need to
try  the [tab] key after typing X or x to find it (if
you have autocomplete active. 

Choose the VESA or fbdev server to try recovering your
screen.
