I have the same laptop. I was upset that Dell only offered Vista and no
XP. However, Vista has a built in partition shrink utility that XP
doesn't. This came in very handy when I wanted to put Fedora on my new
laptop. The utility is in the disk management stuff under the control
panel. I just selected the Vista partition which was like 50gb, then
shrunk it down to 25gb. Then I booted my Fedora CD and configured all my
regular ext3 partitions and completed the install. It was cake.

Fedora found all my hardware with the exception of the built-in dell
wireless. If yours is the same chipset as mine you need to use NDIS
wrappers. That is fairly easy though.
