Or the log /var/log/messages

I also will add a line to /etc/syslog.conf to print everything to a
console then I can ALT-F# (or CTRL-ALT-F# depending on if I using X or
not) to see what the last few lines that went to syslog were.  This
allows me to see errors when plugging in new devices or what ever.
