[NTLUG:Discuss] sound works and does not work continued

I think I have found something (this is a continuation of looking for 
why the sound sometimes works and sometimes doesn't on my Gateway MX8734 
laptop running Mandriva 2007) ...

(1) In comparing the output of ps -ef from various times when the sound 
worked and from when it did not, I have found
    /usr/bin/artsd -F 10 -S 4096 -s 60 -m artsmessage -l 3 -f
listed when the sound worked but not when it didn't.

(2) While I did not find a man page for artsd,  I did find

(3) I don't run KDE, but rather Gnome, but I did install KDE as well as 
Gnome and others.

... anyway, the sound is working just now, but the next time it isn't, I 
shall try running that command line and see if make any difference.

I don't remember who suggested tracking the output of ps -ef, but thank you.
