I think positioning on cable
only matters with you set the drives to 'Cable-Select'...then, yes, it'll
work like you've listed.

Also, on a side-note, it's generally
not a good idea to put two devices on the same cable - you'll get
collusion of data and possible corruption.  It would be a better idea
to get an IDE card (something like this....but shouldn't be this expensive
- can get at Frys):

and attach to that
(especially since it sounds like the machine might be a bit older and the
BIOS may not even be able to 'see' the 500GB.....whereas the BIOS in the
new card probably will).
