Most likely that is a AdHoc network and not setting yourself up as an 
AP.  Like I mentioned before it _can_ work, but it is more difficult 
depending on your overall setup, devices and goals.

Added Info: An AdHoc network is "point to point" according to some docs, 
but that is not really true.  AdHoc network is analogous to a hub based 
network, where anyone associated with the AdHoc network will broadcast 
every packet.  There are issues with collisions and bandwidth 
utilization, just like with a hub.  An infrastructure network is where 
you have an Access Point and it like a switched network, and therefor 
better performance and less issues.
