I disagree. Correctly partitioning your drive can have some rather
significant benefits in the long run, and I think care should be taken when
introducing linux to potential users. To heck with overkill, here's mine:

Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdd1 ext3 7.4G 2.9G 4.3G 40% /
/dev/sdd2 ext3 3.7G 109M 3.5G 4% /boot
/dev/sdd4 ext3 134G 115G 12G 91% /edrv
/dev/sdc3 ext3 452G 404G 25G 95% /home
/dev/sdd3 ext3 3.7G 72M 3.5G 2% /opt
/dev/sdc1 ext3 9.3G 1.4G 7.5G 16% /var
/dev/sda1 ext3 187G 8.8G 169G 5% /xdrive
/dev/sdb1 ext3 38G 24G 13G 65% /cbackup

You can already guess I'm disappointed that Ubuntu limits us from placing
/etc/ on its own partition.
