You might want to try Thunderbird, I'm using it with Prodigy which is
also an AT&T service and SSL is required.  If you decide to try it then
take Edit followed by Account Settings.

You should have an entry titled Home Account, if not click Add Account.
 Take Server Settings under it.  Enter your POP server name (get this
from yahoo if you don't know it) and your user name.  Don't change the
port, just select SSL instead and Thunderbird will take care of that for
you.

At the bottom of the list on the left is an entry Outgoing Server
(SMTP).  Click on it followed by Add.  Enter the SMTP server name this
time followed by the user name and selecting SSL for security.

If you haven't discovered it already, expect email download to be a lot
slower with SSL (roughly half of the non-SSL speed).
