Howdy,
  I think Tony has found it.  Recently, Ubuntu has started leaving the
CD as a source.  You have two options.  A simple one is to take your
Ubuntu CD and put it in the drive when you try to install.  It may well
be faster this way, since any packages on the CD that are current will
be used, instead of having to fetch them over the network.  The other
option is to go to Synaptic, choose Settings/Repositories and deselect
the CD.  You may have to scroll down to see the CD choice.  Then, reload
and try to install the packages you want.
  I want you to tell us more about this kung fu DSL you have.  Super
Fist.  That sounds intimidating.
