this may seem obvious, but have you got the dvd issue of k3b?
there are plugins for dvd that are not in every bin of k3b
also there are dvd libs and tools that k3b will need

since you did not have the dvd drive when you installed your OS perhaps you
need something that wasnt there because it didnt need to be there when you
set up the system.
