Well, I suspected that might be the problem with the version of K3b that
came with SuSE 9.3
so I grabbed the sources for the very latest K3b and built from scratch.
All of the menu items for dealing with DVD's are there - and it opens a
dialog window when
I hit the "Burn ISO-DVD..." entry in the main menu...everything looks
like it's working - right
up to the time when I should be able to say "Start" - but the "Start"
button is greyed out and
where it should be displaying the drive name, it says "Please insert a
blank disk" (or something
like that). I put the blank disk in, and shut the tray - and...nothing.

Well, the version of cdrdao (which I gather is the low level tool that
K3b uses) is the one they
specify for the very latest K3b - and I rebuilt K3b with the latest code
AFTER installing the new
drive. I also went through SuSE's "yast2" tool to make sure it had
recognised the hardware and
installed the drivers. The drivers for this new Pioneer drive are the
generic ones - which are what
my previous CD-ROM drive used.
