Howdy,
I have had excellent results with the HPLIP package used with HP 
multifunction devices.
The software installs easily and it needs very little configuration to work.
All the Gimp, SANE/XSANE and gscan2pdf apps work fine after installing...
I had never had much luck with scanners before.  I am fully functional 
now (no pun intended).
