grip has been around a long time, may not be maintained anymore I don't know
for sure but could be that it just doesn't need any maintenance, but grip
has always worked flawlessly for me. I've used it to rip and just to play
CDs too. Now-days, I just rip all my music into mp3s
dcd is a simple command-line CD player, you might want to try that one too.
There are a lot of CD players and using different ones might help you with
more clues. Which ever one you use, I would run them from command line so
that you can see what ever standard output the various players might give
you - you could possibly tell some more about this problem by seeing system
logs or command line output.
... Could be a hardware problem.
