Howdy,
  So, do you think the problem was that they were 24 bit samples?  I
don't have any files with 24 bit samples.  All mine are 16 bit.  Next
time you get some of those, try converting them to wav files with the
--bps=16 parameter and back to flac.
  That probably accounts for the discrepancy in bit rates.  Hotel
California was probably 16 bits per sample, wasn't it?
