Robert,
Yes SANE is still the way to go. I have a Canon Lide that I bought
several years ago which works great for my needs. It plugs in the USB
port and is detected. SANE comes with a nice graphical interface that
has all the settings for color, resolution, etc. The scanner interface also works from within GIMP.
The important thing is to make sure that whatever you get is going to be supported. Have a look at
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html to see what will work.
