Howdy,
  The other option is to have xsane save jpeg files to begin with.  I
setup a linux scanner for the office at a company recently.  The default
option was to save images as pbm, but I changed it to save as jpeg
files.  It was a preference setting in xsane.  It was pretty obvious
once you start looking, but I don't have that machine handy to tell you
exactly where.
