Thanks-Guys,
      The folks at wicd showed me how to reinstall it.   ((sudo ifconfig 
eth0 up))
It worked!!  Reinstalled it from synaptic mgr.  All is well in Intrepid 
land!!!
Now, my next project is to somehow get network manager-gnome on a usb 
stick as backup, just in case a similar disaster happens!!
