Neil,

I run Ubuntu.  My man page for tar says that "the first argument to tar
must  be  one  of  the options: Acdrtux".  Perhaps moving the "-c" in 
front of the "-z" will change tar's behavior.

Give that a shot, as it's the only thing that comes to my mind.
