[NTLUG:Discuss] Task Logging in Linux?

Way back in my Convex days we had a way to log every task run, by whom
and when.  I've since forgotten how that was done and don't even know if
its possible to do in Linux.  Is it?  If so, how?

I ask because I've got an annoying small 'something' popping up on the
screen periodically and going away in a flash.  It's just barely there,
but annoying since I don't know what it is, and want to find out.

chkrootkit and rkhunter run clean, and there are no telltale oddities of
rootkits, so that looks to be not a problem.
