As stated the expectations of the project would essentially be an
educational exercise. For example, "I really dislike 'this' because of
my experiences with it" and while attempting or observing its
development, you may discover why different approaches are chosen over
others. While it is a good exercise in making things work well with
what you have available, it does nothing to show how it all comes
together or how you could make something work for yourself.

Invariably, all distros start from another as a basis. But what is cool
is that you can then add and subtract things and make your own CD
install containing exactly and only what you want and that would include
any binary-only drivers and such. The point isn't about making yet
another distro, but to learn what makes a distro, how it is put
together, how things get decided and how things are maintained.

These sorts of insights and experiences can help us all learn how to be
better contributors to Linux at large because we would ultimately gain a
far more rich perspective over what the maintainers and developers of
more mainstream and widely used distributions go through.

It's good to know how to make an existing distro useful, but it
contributes nothing to the movement and frankly, after you have used
Linux for more than a few years, you begin to see that Linux distros are
a constantly changing and evolving thing. Most notable in my view are
the changes from the 2.4.x to 2.6.x kernels and what gets excluded from
support in hardware and software.

Much of this stuff I really want to know more about, hence the initial
suggestion.
