Well... for some (me), I use compiz and the Enhanced Zoom feature.  I especially
like <Super>1 (normal), <Super>2 (double?), <Super>3 (max)... zoom follows the
mouse so you can pan around the screen.

Not sure if that's an option for you, but it works well.

The video here makes of zooming as a way of letting you see better what
they're trying to demo.
