You can find out a lot about your hardware with some of the command
lines. k3b uses cdrecord, growisofs and others to actually burn disks,
it just makes it easier than using the commands directly.
You should have cdrecord on your PC, so start with:
cdrecord -scanbus
This will show where on the "SCSI" chain your drive is. Don't worry
about the SCSI part, most burners use the SCSI command set over the IDE
interface to talk to your drive. What you want is the part that shows
where your drive is located:

Which shows my Pioneer DVD at 1001,0,0 which becomes the "dev=1001,0,0"
in the next command:
Then use the command:
cdrecord -prcap -V dev=1001,0,0
The following is an extensive report on the capabilities of the drive.
NOTE the drive capabilities section that says what the drive will read
or write. If it says your drive can write DVD's, then something else is
wrong. If it says you can't write them, then you have a DVD ROM drive.

This works whether you can find specs on your drive or not.
My ancient Yamaha CDRW 4x CDR, 2x rewriteable, 6x read CDRW drive whose
