Leroy,

I use SeaMonkey which is the current name for Mozilla.  In the 
(edit->preferences->send format) control you can set it to how the 
message is sent (Text only, HTML only or both).  I thought Thunderbird 
had the same setting control.  It's been a long time since I used 
Thunderbird so I'm not positive on this.
