In buying a laptop you get what you get. There is no changing video cards or anything like that. When I bought my laptop I made a list of hardware I would accept and a list I would not.

It was really simple.
WIRELESS I had to return my last laptop because I couldn't get the Broadcom wireless working. So no to Broadcom. Intel wireless chips are well supported so I went with that.
VIDEO I wanted a good video card so Nvidia was the choice. I saw a lot of laptops with the Intel 3100 video card but I could never get a straight answer as to if that does 3D hardware acceleration like Nvidia does. I stuck with Nvidia. I use the akmod and akmod-nvidia driver for my GeForce 8400M GS card.
SOUND on a laptop isn't that good. Most sound cards are pretty well supported so I didn't put this high on my list. My machine came with Intel sound and I understand most Intel chips are very well supported. Mine works out of the box without a hitch.

I am using Fedora 11. Everything works the first time out of the box. No fuss, no muss

Based on this I went with a HP Pavillion dv6700 17" screen.
