I use the W3C validator as a check that there aren't any bugs in the 
page.  If the page passes the W3C validator then (in theory) the page 
will render as expected by all compliant browsers.  In the real world we 
know that some browsers claiming to be compliant really aren't.  A clean 
run through the validator means that your pages should come out right at 
least 95% of the time.  W3C is the standard so I wouldn't bother with 
the others.  Of course that's JMO.
