I hope it works out for you, but the Ubuntu CD may make your
life easier. All I had to do to mount my Windows drive was a 
couple of clicks of the mouse.  Once you do that, you can
drag and drop to pull the files to your USB stick.  

Seems much easier than using a rescue mode command line interface 
and trying to figure out all the right commands.

Just my $.02 worth.
