You say you can get to a command prompt.  If you want to shutdown from
there, issue the command:
  sudo shutdown -h now

I am guessing you probably setup mythbuntu to auto start when the system
comes up.  Once everything works, that is probably what you want for a
media system.  I see some references that Mythbuntu uses xfce and you
can edit what automatically starts by going to a terminal prompt and
running:
  xfce4-autostart-editor
