As has been suggested it might be best to try more than one LiveCD to
see if everything works with any of them.
This will test the CDROM problem as well. Obviously if the CDROM
hardware has failed you cannot try LiveCDs.
The backup of your existing install would save all your new
configurations but one of these might be the root of your problem. One
typo can be fatal.
Since I am not a Power User, I have in desperation installed Windows
XP just to check the hardware (usually a disk) and make sure it was
bad.
If the hardware or sound doesn't work with Windows it is broken.
Now I am a big fan of the SystemRescueCD for most problems.

The Knoppix LiveCD is still a good "last resort" try over standard
distro LiveCDs for obscure problems. It seems as if every known driver
is on that CD.

Sometimes trouble shooting is like peeling an onion. You have to start
removing the last thing you did until it works again.
