I've monitored this list for many years, and it's always amazed me how
the simplest of questions can be interpreted in so many different
ways.

My suggestion was valid:  Learn the basics, and move up from there.  I
never said it was necessary to learn the internals of the GIF format,
and your question really didn't have anything to do with the internals
of the GIF format.  You had a basic question, which warranted a basic
answer.  If you already knew how to set up an e-commerce site, you
probably wouldn't have been asking the basic questions in the first
place.  

Take the advice or leave it, your choice.  Good luck with your
project.
