We could have a section dedicated to Linux and another to Windows,
promoting OpenSource and some other software that is less expensive than
most for Windows and Linux.
Examples:
QCad, a dxf compatible drawing CAD in the vein of Generic CAD, TurboCAD
and others at about $30 US (last time I bought it). It runs on Windows
and Linux, and yes Ubuntu has a version of it for free. Compare this to
the other CAD's from $350 to over $4,000. Yes, I do use it, but it
doesn't have all the things I need for work. I contributed the original
Greek fonts to RibbonSoft Software many years ago.
Cepstral: text to speech software for Mac OS/X, Linux, Windows and
Solaris (depending on voices). Multiple languages and both male and
female voices. Cost is about $30 per voice and you can listen to the
voices to pick your choice. I liked "Diane" as her voice was more clear
and better at the words I gave her than the others, in my opinion. You
can hear the male and female versions of text to speech by listening to
channels 5.2 and 8.2 with the weather alerts. "Cloudy" comes out the
same with Diane.... I use this to create my own "audio books" from
text, like Moby Dick and others.
I'm NOT a purist as I have needs that Open Source doesn't fully fulfill,
but I don't have deep pockets either, so if the price is right and does
what I need or want, I'll pay for it. That's why Borland did so well in
the early days with Turbo Pascal, Turbo C, Turbo Prolog, Reflex and
Paradox, their price was reasonable and people bought it. Which makes
me curious... are there tools for porting the Borland Turbo products to
Linux?
Yes, I use the PROPRIETARY nVidia drivers for Linux, I like the
performance boost. I still use Microsoft, but primarily for SolidEdge
Origin CAD software and H&R block TaxCut for my taxes. I rarely boot it
up otherwise, but when I do.... OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird,
Sunbird, FileZilla, Clam AV, Cain&Able, nmap, , and others for the most
part.

For those who run Windows, have Portable Apps loaded on a flash drive and demo them on the Windows side of the fest.
