Is the download originally working before you downloaded it?  That is, is it widely downloaded and known working or a low low download count with no complaints?

Do the support forums related to the download contain problems similar to yours?  MD5 can be computed on any file whether it is corrupt or not. What you are describing is a failed ISO creation step that wasn't caught. 

Will xen or an iso viewer iso reader open the file? NO? likely whoever created it didn't detect error messages.

If you can access it from windows will a windows reader/writer work?
