I have SSD on both my desktop and notebook, and it works great.
On both I've installed the OS to the SSD, which makes things
(especially startup) nicely fast. On the desktop I also kept
the hard drive for additional storage, as you suggest, and also
use the older drives for swap space. (My desktop has plenty of
RAM, though, so rarely hits swap.)

Anyway, SSD and Linux work very nicely for me. I'll be glad
to answer any other questions you might have.
