Howdy,
  Put /boot and /usr on the SSD, and everything else on a mechanical
drive.  I would probably mount /boot and /usr as read only, with
noatime.  Then, I would remount as read/write when I want to do
updates.  You definitely want the noatime, but the normally mounting
as read only is a good idea that may not be worth the trouble to
everyone.  It should make the SSD last longer.
