Bobby,
To second the Brother line... I got a Color MFC (Brother 9120)
from Fry's (on sale around $300?) and have been very happy with it.
Maybe you could find something in their product line that fits?

Linux drivers: Yes.
To make the Brother's scan-to-PDF feature work though I did have to
re-compile my SANE with a ADF patch(!).

-I'm a low page count user, my ink always dried out before I finished a cartridge.
Now my toner never dries up/expires. Still on my original toner carts!

NOTE: it is a document printer, not a photo printer. Will do photos
but they won't exactly impress.
