If you use Debian stable, your computer will run forever (once you get
it set up).  You'll have old software, but your computer won't freeze
up.  I tend to use stable until Debian gets near the "freeze" for a
new release, when all the packages in the distribution are fixed, and
only release-critical bugs get fixed.  Then I slip into to another
couple of years using stable.  That keeps me in my comfort zone.
