Twothings to try (this is for KDE 4.8.5 -- YMMV):
  - Right click on the taskbar, click "Task Manager Settings", 
    change "Grouping" to "Do Not Group".

  - Turn off Desktop Effects.  My KDE has a shortcut key to do
    this (Alt+Shift+F12), or you can disable it at startup 
    from System Settings => Desktop Effects => General.

Do either of those get rid of the problem?
