Howdy John,

It is very easy to simply pull the drives and put them into an external 
enclosure.  If you wand to use them as additional storage or as RAID, 
you can install a hardware RAID card in the available slot and configure 
them as a mirrored second volume.

I kept my old ATA drives in my desktop for a while and eventually got 
rid of them by putting them in external USB cases and using them for 
bulk backups.  SATA works better/faster and you can't find ATA interface 
stuff anywhere any more...

When switching from one computer to another, I make a cloned image of 
the entire drive with Clonezilla and transfer the image to the drive in 
the new computer.  That's pretty much required for laptops because of 
the space limitations of itty bitty HDDs and SSDs.
