Hi John,

A lot of other people gave you detailed ways to accomplish this. Have
you considered not doing this at all? IIRC 3TB SATA drives are slightly
over $100. The biggest PATA (IDE) drives I've seen are what, 300GB? A
lot of old PATA are less than 100GB, and the really old ones are less
than 10GB. In my opinion, it comes to the point where you spend much
more per GB shoehorning a PATA into your computer than just buying a
new SATA.

One place where a PATA drive is useful is in a lightly used server or
firewall using an old computer that was meant for PATA.

Depends on the distro. It's pretty easy with Ubuntu. Others can tell
you how to do it with other distros.
