Laser printers heat-from-the-back to fuse the toner onto the paper. if you've doubled the thickness of a 20lb sheet of paper, your check could have disappearing ink. You may need need to find a paper type setting and make it something like 'cover'.

they had was a sheet with a sticky strip on the top of the page.  If you 
had a less than full sheet you stick the first check at the top of the 
page so it lined up correctly.  IIRC there was a sticky strip where the
