maybe you should re-run /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl ?

i think i have experienced this same thing after a kernel upgrade and i
remember having to re-run some installation scripts to have the
networking work again. running the script didn't cause me to lose any
guest OS data. i can't remember exactly how i got it working again, but
i would try the command above... good luck!! :-)
