That used to be the case - VMware used to have a Student/Hobiest License
for their VMware Workstation product.
Pricing now is $299.00 for electronic download, and $329.00 for the
boxed set.

Personal experience:
I have not had any problems with VMware on Caldera eDesktop 2.4, but I
have experience some install issues on Red Hat 6.2, and I am currently
dealing with VMware support to try to make it install on Red Hat 7.1
