[NTLUG:Discuss] How do I remove unused programs?

How would I go about identifying unused programs and files and stuff?
What is the proper procedure to uninstall programs in linux? I am
wanting to clear some disk spce, and I know I probably do not need a lot
of whats in there. Thanks
