Check for usepeerdns in /etc/ppp/options if you have that move on to the next 
step and check for a /etc/ppp/ip_up file.  If you are missing it just reinstall 
the pppd package as it is easier that trying to fix or replace the scripts by 
hand.  I would imagine it is one of these items that is causing your name 
resolving not to work.
