[NTLUG:Discuss] Sane is driving me insane

Please help me get my scanner running.
I am running Mandrake 8.1
Kooka said it needed SANE so I installed it from a tarball.
So:
1. backend installed OK but frontend say it cant find the libs.
2. added line "/usr/local/lib" to the /etc/ld.so.config file
3. deleted the config.cache file in the frontend directory
4  ran ./configure for the frontend.
5  when I run make it says "no target"
6  ????????????????????? HuH?
What now?
