Yeah, that can be a real pain, especially with older/cheaper network
cards (pretty much the only kind I use).

Now that you've reinstalled, I guess you'll never know exactly what was
going wrong, but it's good to hear there might be a semi-reasonable
explanation for the problems. That's one of the things I've most
appreciated about troubleshooting linux as opposed to windows: it's
usually possible to _figure out_ what the problem is, at least
eventually. When I was using windows, problems often seemed completely
intractable, and reinstalling seemed to be the only solution.
