[NTLUG:Discuss] database(s) on Linux

Just FYI while transaction support used to be a valid argument this is becoming
a non-issue with MySQL.

http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/LOCK_TABLES.html
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/SET_TRANSACTION.html
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/ANSI_diff_Transactions.html

Stored procedures and db triggers are now supported as well.

Coming Soon

Subselects - It explains fairly openly how this effects MySQL’s use.
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/ANSI_diff_Sub-selects.html
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/TODO_MySQL_4.1.html

Views - Read this to see why this wasn't a priority of the MySQL developers.
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/ANSI_diff_Views.html

Just some FYI stuff in the midst of people proving their worth on slashdot. I
know I find it hard to wade through the bs and rhetoric of DBAs who probably
aren't qualified for jobs as menial as drive thru but pass themselves off as
DBAs on slashdot. I also have to say I have a bit of a bias towards MySQL only
because of the length of time I have used it and the pain of the learning curve
I associate with using another product that may or may not do for me what MySQL
already does. I personally began using it for simple reasons like speed. I
prefer to use it now because I find for the applications I've developed it
works wonderfully. I think the biggest argument for MySQL is the fact that
when people started asking for new features like stored procs and transactions
the developers took note and began cranking these pieces out. Hopefully this
helps dispel some of the myths regarding MySQL.

A point of interest is that finance.yahoo.com runs mysql which I think goes to
show that the argument people make about mysql's stability may have little to
do with the db as much as it does its admin.
