[NTLUG:Discuss] RH9 - Panic on install

OK, I did the unthinkable, I went to Fry's and bought a new box. I've
been back every night this week swaping parts trying to get it to
work. Apparently, in spite if the huge sign pushing the combo, a Soyo
motherboard and Mushkin ram are NOT compatible. 

So after working for a week to get it past POST, I'm trying to
install. I've been using RH since 2.0 so it was my first inclination,
so I picked up RH9 to try out the spiffy new version with my spiffy
new 'puter. 

Right after the boot prompt when it starts to load the install kernel
I get a panic. The string is "Panic: Trying to kill init" or something
close to that. I also get flashing Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights on
my PS/2 keyboard, The USB keyboard doesn't do that.

I've tried booting in text mode, adding the mem=512M kernel param and
the noprobe param and any and all combinations of those. 

Has anybody seen this or have any idea which direction I might look?
