And to answer this part of your question, it will overwrite the existing 
MBR with whatever the lilo.conf (in this case, on your Redhat setup) 
specifies.

Thus the reason I recommend using a single lilo.conf that both dists can 
see.

If you are just installing, you could either:
a) print out your existing lilo.conf and incorporate those entries into 
your new lilo.conf when setting that up in the RedHat setup.
b) just go with the default to get RedHat booting, then once booted, mount 
your / partition from the other dist on a temporary mount point and grab 
your etc/lilo.conf from it; then, merge what you want from both into one 
(perhaps taking my suggestion) and run lilo.
c) do it all from memory.  Maybe fine for me 10 years ago, but these days 
I'm finding that my brain's filesystem is heavily fragmented.

I wish there were a defragmenter for my brain.  Or maybe I just need 
another layer in my neural net.  Or maybe I need to drink more beer, hoping 
for the buffalo effect.
